Do I need to pay any other excesses?

Any excess will be clearly noted on your policy schedule.

If you make a claim, you’ll need to pay the standard excess.  If you’ve chosen a voluntary excess, you also pay this when you make a claim.  You may also need to pay an imposed excess, which is an additional amount because of the higher risk of loss or damage.

For example, factors contributing to an imposed excess on car insurance could include the age, driving and claims record of the driver at the time of the incident, as well as the car’s condition.  Your car might also have an imposed excess if it’s insured for a high amount or it’s at a higher risk of theft.

An imposed excess is listed as a special policy condition in your policy.

Can I increase my excess to lower my premium?

This is called a voluntary excess and it can really suit people who don’t claim very often.  Generally the higher the excess you choose, the lower your premium. You pay the voluntary excess on top of the standard excess.

Voluntary excess options include:

Vehicle insurance (Comprehensive only): $500, $750, $1,000, $1,500 and $2,500
House insurance: $300, $500, $750, $1,000 and $1,500
Contents insurance: $300, $500, $750, $1,000 and $1,500

To find out how much you could save by choosing a higher excess, call us on 0800 500 213.

What types of excesses are there?

Standard excess: the standard amount listed on your policy.
Voluntary excess: an extra amount you can choose to pay on top of the standard excess, which usually means we’ll reduce your premium.
Imposed excess: an additional amount because of a higher than average risk of loss or damage.

You only pay an excess when you make a claim.

What is an excess?

When you make a claim, you pay a small part of the cost and we pay the rest. Your part is called the ‘excess’, and you pay it only when you make a claim.

If your car insurance has a windscreen extension, you won’t pay an excess on windscreen repairs.
