It’s been a tough few months and we’re mindful that the motor insurance premiums our customers have been paying simply didn’t reflect the extraordinary situation we’ve all been in. As New Zealanders had fewer motor accidents during Alert Level 4 and 3, we wanted to give back what we can to our motor customers.

Motor Premium rebates

We strongly believe in fairness and doing the right thing. During the COVID-19 lockdown we experienced fewer claims for motor accidents because Kiwis weren’t using their vehicles as much. This means the motor insurance premiums that customers paid for this period were not an accurate reflection of the extraordinary times we’ve been in. So back in April, we announced that we would be providing a rebate to our motor customers.

That’s why we’re arranging a premium rebate for all of our eligible personal motor insurance customers who held a policy with us and paid premiums during the period of the COVID-19 lockdown, from Tuesday 24 March 2020 to Wednesday 13 May 2020.  The amount of the premium rebate is approximately 42% of an eligible policy’s base premium.  The base premium is the portion of the premium that gets paid to motor claims, after any applicable discounts have been deducted and excludes taxes and levies.

We will be contacting eligible customers to update them on their premium rebate and next steps. There is nothing you need to do.

Important information: The AA Insurance Hardship Fund initiative is available to existing eligible AA Insurance customers who have taken out an eligible policy with a commencement date starting before 5 pm, 16 April 2020. The AA Insurance Premium Freeze initiative is available to existing AA Insurance customers who have an eligible policy that is renewed on or after 16 April 2020.
