5 ways to protect your home during a reno
15 December 2016
You’ve made a start on the reno, and have just added up the cost of all those big ticket items you’ve installed. Now you’re wondering how to protect them while the work is still underway. Well keep reading, as our AA Insurance claims expert, Simon Hobbs, gives you the low down on looking after your stuff, and yourself, during the renovation.
1. Neighbourhood watch
With tradespeople coming and going from your property, your neighbours are less likely to know who should and shouldn’t be there. So it’s a good idea to let them know who you’re expecting and when, especially if you’re not living at the property during the reno.
2. Remove temptation
Keep tools, ladders, wheelie bins and anything that could be used to get access to your house out of sight or away from the home. For example, a large pile of excess wood near a window makes for a great platform to get into your home, while a wheelbarrow is tempting to transport items away from the site!
3. Out of sight, out of mind
Be careful when disposing of any tell-tale packaging for the fantastic new things you’ve purchased to go in your home. Place packaging inside your rubbish bin or bags, so anyone passing your home won’t know you have any new items worth stealing.
4. Safety first
Ensure you take appropriate safety precautions to protect yourself while you’re getting stuck into a bit of DIY, i.e. protective eyewear, gloves, footwear etc.
5. Finishing up
Simon Hobbs is a member of the AA Insurance executive team and makes sure we help our customers when they need us the most.
