Star struck in Wellington

5 May 2016

A panda, an ogre and a bunch of misfit zoo animals were just some of the draw cards for over 135,000 movie fans who flocked to DreamWorks Animation: The Exhibition at Te Papa museum in Wellington this summer season.

Partnering with AA Insurance, the museum offered a glimpse into how the DreamWorks magic was made. From sketch books and models of favourite characters to the latest in whizz-bang digital programming, the exhibition catered for youngsters simply intrigued by talking animals as well as those old enough to consider a career in the business.

Complementing the exhibition was a vibrant schedule of public programmes from AA Insurance, including a Jungle Party Family Day where  a thousand or so kids and adults dressed for the occasion in jungle themed costumes - some cute, some scary.

The search for New Zealand’s favourite DreamWorks animated character drew 3,000 votes, with the chance to secure a family Wellington weekend experience. The clear character winner, by a hoof, was Donkey from Shrek movies who took out a quarter of all votes, followed by Toothless from How to Train Your Dragon, and Puss from Puss in Boots.

As long-time sponsors of the police charity, Blue Light, AA Insurance also hosted 150 youth and staff to a free preview of the exhibition, a screening of a DreamWorks movie, and a guest appearance by the panda himself, Po, from Kung Fu Panda. Needless to say, the black-and-white one was mobbed for selfies that were quickly posted online.

It was no surprise that social media was a popular way for visitors to share their experiences of the exhibition. It received overwhelmingly positive responses captured in both images and videos as well as comments like these:

6am flight to Wellington was so worth it today to check out DreamWorks Animation: The Exhibition....

The DreamWorks exhibition at Te Papa is a love letter to sketching and painting. So much fun!

Second time going to the DreamWorks exhibition at Te Papa and it’s still amazing.
