6 ways for small business owners to stress less
23 April 2019
Running a small business can be stressful. There’s a lot of responsibility on your shoulders to keep things running, and often this can mean that you’re never really “off the clock”. However, it’s important to take care of yourself, learn how to deal with stress and maintain a healthy work-life balance, so we’ve put together a few simple, but important tips to help.
1. Celebrate the positive
First things first, focus on all the things you’ve done right! When you’re putting all your energy into what’s wrong, stress will only continue to grow. It’s a good idea to keep a list of all your accomplishments and milestones, so you remember how far you’ve come and what you’ve achieved.
2. Take care of yourself
When you’re hungry, thirsty, or tired, the smallest things can seem overwhelming. So, make sure you invest the time to plan your meals for the week and have healthy snacks on hand to keep you from running on empty. Keeping yourself well hydrated and making time to go for a quick walk around the block to clear your head will do you a world of good when you’re feeling under pressure. It’s incredible how clear headed you feel after a good night’s sleep.
3. Develop systems to help delegate
Creating systems for everyday tasks means you don’t have to reinvent the wheel each time you do something. Developing systems and documenting all the things you have on the go will make it easier to get other people to help during busy periods or when you start to grow instead of doing everything yourself, resulting in time saved and less stress! An example of a useful planning tool is Trello. Trello is a free, easy to use app which helps you to manage multiple tasks and projects.
4. Set daily goals
When you’ve got a super stressful day ahead, set goals at the start of the day and focus on the most important tasks. Encourage yourself along the way and reward yourself as you cross each item off the list.
5. Making time for friends and family
Keeping connections with friends and family thriving while running a business can be hard, but it’s vital to settle stress and to help with work-life balance. Simple things like joining a friend for a run on your lunch break or having a lunch date with your spouse can help provide that much needed break and bit of inspiration.
6. There's help if you need it
There are lots of different resources and support available to help Kiwi small business owners - from funding to mentoring. Here’s a selection of some of the resources you may find helpful:
- Icehouse - The Icehouse is a business growth centre that creates learning environments for entrepreneurs, business owners and founders to enable them to significantly grow their companies.
- Regional Business Partner Network - takes a birds-eye look at businesses, then helps them connect with the right resources and experts so they can build capability and grow.
- Business Mentors - Business Mentors New Zealand Limited is a not-for-profit organisation dedicated to supporting the success and growth of small businesses through the knowledge and experience of our volunteer mentors.
