Lights out at AA Insurance this Earth Day

Row of glowing light bulbs

Our natural world is changing rapidly; what we do now will determine our future and that of all following generations. To help raise public awareness about protecting the planet, Earth Day is celebrated on April 22 each year.

There isn’t a first, second or third place awarded in this global challenge; we’re all in it together and need to inspire, support and join forces to make the changes we need happen. Every deliberate change for the better will make a difference – no matter how big or small.

This year’s Earth Day theme - Restore our Earth - sounds like a mammoth task. It is. But if every single one of us makes a change in our own life - one that’s relatively easy and won’t leave us with a feeling of loss - the greater the chance of it being sustainable and help to reach our collective goal.

Being curious, sharing ideas, educating others and caring enough to tune in to the dialogue are key to the reality of a restored and sustainable future.

So, let’s start some long-lasting change right now. This Earth Day, the lights on AA Insurance House will be switched off from dusk until dawn, saving the energy that would otherwise be reported for our April carbon emissions. Our ‘lights out’ initiative is just one of the ways we’re helping this month; we’re also assisting 10 staff to learn more about climate change and solutions, and funding trees to be planted on behalf of our people.

In particular, the latter is about helping inspire our people to share what small (or big) actions they’ve deliberately taken to protect our planet. It could be composting, making a worm farm, planting natives, riding instead of driving, reusing bags, changing to long-lasting lightbulbs, or conserving water. We’re hoping their change inspires others and perhaps create a change movement.

To show our people that our commitment isn’t just lip service, for every action they take and share with others, AA Insurance will fund the planting of two native trees. This is because we appreciate every change our people are able and willing to make. We want to recognise and support their effort and, in doing so, be part of helping restore our earth.
