Frequently asked questions

If you can't find the answer you're looking for, please contact us.

Do I need to list all drivers on my policy?

Our car insurance policies have an open driver policy, unless a special term has been applied to your policy. This means that any licenced driver who has your permission to drive your car, will be automatically covered, provided they comply with our policy conditions and any applicable licence conditions. For example, drivers must not have any unacceptable traffic or criminal convictions and must not have had any unacceptable claims or accidents (for example, a driver using the car illegally).

Please see your policy document for more information on all policy conditions that you and your drivers must comply with.

It’s important to note that excesses relating to age and driving experience may apply to you and your drivers. Please see your policy schedule for excesses that may apply and to determine if a special term has been applied to your policy.

Any drivers who will be regularly driving your car should be added to your policy. This is a quick and simple process and ensures you know they are covered should you need to make a claim.

If you have any questions about who is covered to drive your car or if you’d like to add a driver to your policy, please contact us. Alternatively, you can add a driver to your policy using My AA Insurance.

Does my Car Insurance Policy include AA Membership?

AA Membership is not automatically included in your car insurance policy, but can be purchased separately. It will give you dollar discounts off your insurance premiums when you give us your personal AA Membership number each time you take out or renew an eligible policy. If you're interested in more information, please visit our website.

Am I covered to drive if I have a medical condition, or recently had surgery?

There is no cover if you have been advised or directed not to drive by your doctor, midwife or other medical professional. However, once you have received the all clear to drive, this exclusion will no longer apply.

A surgery may also include a hysterectomy or caesarean.

How do I add a driver to my car policy?

To add a driver to your car policy, first sign in to your My AA Insurance account.

Choose the policy you want to update from your policy list, then select Update your policy from the top left menu. Under Your car you'll see Listed drivers. You'll need to be able to provide their full name, date of birth and answer questions about their driving history.

If you have a classic car, motorhome or motorcycle, policy please contact us so we can add a driver for you.

Can I include excess-free glass cover on my policy?

You can add excess-free glass cover to your Comprehensive or Third Party Fire & Theft policies.

Excess-free glass cover is not available on Third Party, Classic Vehicle, Motorcycle, Caravan and Trailer policies. If you choose not to include excess-free glass cover on your Third Party Fire & Theft policy, damage to your windscreen or window glass is covered only if it’s caused by attempted theft or vandalism and the excess would still apply.

If you choose not to include excess-free glass cover on your Comprehensive policy, we will still insure your windscreen and window glass, but you will need to pay an excess for any claim you make.
